[ All right, Tenzin, the important thing is not to panic. Yes, you've woken up in an unfamiliar location, had to re-dress yourself, have a pair of wings and don't have any idea where your family is in all this mess.
Well, at least keep it brief if you must. He tilts himself more towards concern and outrage in light of this. There's bound to be an explanation and a way back to the South Pole, where he ought to be, and he'll simply have to get there. Wings or not.
The first and most difficult step, of course, is managing to wander towards civilization instead of further into the middle of nowhere. BEARDED MAN ON THE APPROACH, FEEL FREE TO CONTINUE WITH YOUR PLAYTIME. ]
[ And playtime it is. If Tenzin listens, he might hear familiar laughter. Ikki typically spends her free time in town - at the fountain, at the playground, rare moments at the library to drag Jinora out of it - and isn't hard to find there, unless you count the part where she moves around a lot.
Today she's in the fountain again, wading and making little airbent tidal waves, because she can. This is probably going to become a summer staple.
Besides, no parents have dropped out of nowhere to haul her out of it before, so. ]
[ Oh, but that is a familiar voice, one he immediately hones in on and makes a beeline for. She doesn't sound upset or afraid, that's good- as good as Ikki being involved in this can really be, that is.
He'd suppose he's actually just grateful for something he knows. If this is the spirit world, Tenzin's very sure it's not what he pictured. He scans the surroundings with no small amount of interest: buildings, roads mostly dirt, a variety of people who are... very interesting, to say the least, his child, a fountain-
ah. ]
Ikki! [ He's completely allowed to do his calling while he's still halfway across the square, that's good protocol, right? ]
[ Reflexive tensing up and innocent smile go here, as Ikki spins herself up and out of the water and onto the ground beside the fountain on automatic. Her name in that voice just sets off a chain reaction, no thought needed. ] I wasn't in the fountain! I was just -
She knows that voice, reacted to it because she's always known it. She grew up with that voice, and she's heard it in every tone imaginable - praising, affectionate, calming, exasperated, scolding...
Ikki looks around the square, pinpointing the source immediately. ]
DADDY! [ No time for thinking, Ikki's just going to run across the square and throw herself at her father, hanging off of him and holding on as tight as she possibly can.
She hasn't seen him in over a week, and Ikki's too thrilled to really think coherently for a second. ]
[ Hugging is most definitely a go. He's not even going to complain about any excess force in clinging after catching her, because she's fine enough for clinging, apparently.
This is probably one of the better opportunities to make sure she's in one piece too, Ikki's usual enthusiasm taken into account.
And... wings for Ikki as well. There's no reason that she wouldn't have them, of course, everyone seems to, but it never hurt to hope for the best. First and most important order of business: ]
Yep, I'm fine! [ And she is. She's extra fine right now, since Tenzin is here.
Instead of going straight to her New Feather stand-bys - your wings are your life or welcome to Luceti - Ikki dives straight into the first thing she wants to say to her father.
It involves shoving her right wrist for him to see, where Aang's prayer beads are looped around twice. ] Look what Grandpa gave me!
No, that can't be right. A mistake? A sympathetic actor, an impostor? He touches them, lightly, and lets his eyebrows take the sharp turn downward.
It would be lying to say they aren't familiar. And maybe that's the most unsettling part of this so far. Another unusual piece of today's puzzle, in which the spirit world looks more and more likely, because if it's not the spirit world then he's got a very severe problem on his hands... on top of the already severe nature of the problem that they're apparently facing, that is. ]
When did that happen? [ And how long have you been here? ]
Ummm. [ Hold on, daddy, she has to do some mental math, easily her least favourite kind. She counts backwards on her fingers. ] Six days ago! Right after - [ The announcement about Luke's death, but she cuts herself off. She doesn't want to mention that. He'd be back in one more day, then, if the one-week rule held true. ]
Anyway, they're to protect me, so I'm okay. Besides, we're in the town, and I know lots of people. No one's going to hurt me here, and I'm not supposed to go out into the forest or anything without someone, so. [ She recites the last part like the house rule it is.
And then pulls herself higher into Tenzin's hold so she can peer over his shoulders. ] Your life is yellow, daddy! Wo-ow, mine're sort of yellow, but not that colour.
You most certainly shouldn't. [ Approve rules that keep his daughter out of an unknown forest without supervision? Always. He accommodates the shift in position as ever he does, almost absent-mindedly.
Six days? They would have noticed that- people don't somehow miss out when Ikki's not talking, even with equalist movements and a relocation to the South Pole pulling on their attention, and their family couldn't overlook an empty space at all. She knows people here, she knows where she is, his 'life' is yellow-?
He's definitely not used to having to ask his children for the answers. He doesn't know what points to start on. And he's not entirely sure how accurate the answers Ikki would give are likely to really be. Tenzin takes a calming breath through his nose, turns his head to glance over his shoulder, and speaks up quietly. ]
Ikki, I need you to tell me everything that's happened.
[ Everything? Ikki looks surprised, before realizing, belatedly, that this is the part where she should give the speech. She automatically rewinds through the days, starting at the beginning because Tenzin is the one asking.
That doesn't mean she's talking slowly, but her father is more than used to her speed. ]
'Kay. I got here nine days ago and the first day was pretty nice and I met Grandpa and Katara and Uncle Sokka and Uncle Roku and Uncle Zuko and Appa and Momo, and also Vivi and Nomi and Luke and Shikamaru and Chien and Soren, who're all from different worlds than we are, 'cause we're on a port world, Katara explained that to me. And we're on a port world with docks for times as well as worlds so she's younger than she usually is with reaaaaaally pretty hair, and Grandpa Aang doesn't even have a beard! And Uncle Sokka gave me chocolate and soda that comes in a metal can instead of a bottle and said if I'm good he'll make me my own boomerang and teach me to use it and I can design it and maybe Aunt Toph will make me a statue of my head!
And then the next day I talked to Nami in her journal 'cause she talked about pinwheels and also the war a bit 'cause there's a war on which Katara told me about, it's between the Malnosso and the "Third Party" and it's about Shifts or something I'm not sure on the details but people fight in it sometimes, and I talked to Luke who was nice and promised to teach me magic - [ She faltered there, for a split second. And then went on. ]
And it was Nami's birthday party so we went, and it was in a mikan grove, which are sort of like oranges, and I played hide-and-seek tag with Vivi and met Luffy who Katara said I could trust always and he's a pirate who will be the Pirate King except right now he's a girl 'cause of an experiment which is what happens to people sometimes here 'cause the Malnosso are practicing their shifts.
And the day after that I drew pictures and wrote an entry and talked to lots and lots of new people - Sifu Raine and Yotsuba and Ven and Pao-Lin and Smoker who's in a navy like Uncle Bumi and Jeb and Rapunzel who's starting an art club with me and who's a princess like Vivi - and Masaomi Kida who's Katara's friend and who has a pokemon which are animals from another world who can bend kinda and Lupin who I promised I'd save a brownie for 'cause it was Katara's birthday and she's seventeen now and we had a beach party and I got to wear the swimsuit she got for me when we went shopping on the first day. But before that I talked to Dr. Eggman who builds robots and shampoos his moustache which looks like nose hair to me and talked to Peter Parker who says soda is okay in moderation but not to have lots and someone weird posted and said I was boring which was rude.
And then at the party I met more people like Zoro who's really big and ugly right now and has a bad sense of direction but Vivi says it's just an experiment that he's ugly but that his hair was always green - and Vivi's hair is blue, and Nami has really bright orange hair and did I tell you Luffy's made of rubber and can tie her nose up only normally she's a guy but experiment - so anyway I painted GranGran a picture for her birthday and she said she loved it and I made Aunt Toph wire pictures before the party 'cause she can't see my drawings and we hung lots of them up all around the party so she could see them too and we put some up around the house later. And there was cake, and cookies, only some of the cookies tasted spicy like peppers, and lots of things. And I talked to lots of people and met Trafalgar who looks like he's from the Water Tribe but isn't, and it was a really fun day. And Jinora and Asami both got here that day so they came home with us and it was nice!
And then the next day I talked to Patty who's a pirate who came here in a washtub although I didn't know washtubs floated, and then I talked to a guy who can make magic not work who wanted to know our favourite foods and we might put on a play but I dunno if we will, and I talked to Beast who wants to do a puzzle so we did that last Thursday 'cause it was fun and he's actually sort of half an animal I've never seen - did I tell you the animals talk here and Shikamaru says in our world the animals are like two of his animals? And so anyway then I heard about Luke - Luke had died, and I learned about the week limit, where if you die you come back in a week. And I talked to Grandpa, and he gave me these.
[ Ikki paused her monologue to touch the prayer beads, a little smile playing on her lips. ]
And then Aunt Lin got here and I talked to someone who thought this place is boring when it isn't 'cause how could it be?
And then the next day I went out with Grandpa Aang and we got lemonade at a stand, and then I talked to Hubert who was a New Feather - a New Feather is someone like you, daddy, who just got here, and I was one when I got here, and I guess I still am 'cause I'm still new - and anyway then I talked to Silver who has red hair even though his name is Silver, and Temari who had just gotten back, and then I went to get the Super Sister Celebratory Surprise cake with Vivi at Sanji's restaurant and it turns out both his eyebrows swirl, and then I went to Tanabata which is a festival here and on lots of Earths and I made wishes on paper and tied them to a tree and Grandpa lifted me up to do it and then I watched Chien and Soren battle Masaomi and Linda and Chien lost and Soren was hurt but it was still amazing and I think they'll be okay and I meet Chien most afternoons to practice reading and writing and he's nice and thirteen and also there were fireworks!
And then the next day I talked to Asch, who lives in a world with magic called fonons, and it was really interesting and I wanna talk to him again soon. And then the day after that I talked to Abel and then I talked to someone named Jay who wouldn't tell me his age so I told him he's fifty-seven and will be fifty-eight next year and then to Steve about SHIELD which is an organization not a shield although he has one of those too and then to Xzana who needed to go to the river and I told her I'd bring her food every afternoon, and then Korra got here with Tarrlok and she doesn't even remember he's creepy.
And I talked to Sue and she asked me my age and then wouldn't tell me hers and people shouldn't ask if they're not gonna tell but then she did and it's a secret so I can't tell you! And then I saved Lee from falling out of the sky and then I asked Hiccup to build us airbending gates but don't tell anyone 'cause it's a secret surprise for everyone and he said he could do it but might need Uncle Sokka's help and then I rescued Eiko from a tree. And then Grandpa introduced me to Moro when we were washing Appa, that's this huuuuuuuge wolf spirit, and that was fun, although Moro isn't very friendly but that's okay. And Korra and Asami moved out 'cause they did and I haven't been to their house yet but I bet it's nice.
[ Okay that's most of it, what else? Quick breath, and then we're in the home stretch. ]
And I do airbending practice for a few hours everyday with Grandpa and Uncle Roku and Jinora and now Korra, and Korra's wondering about boys still, and we have family dinners every night, and Sifu Raine said I could go to school when it starts back up!
This is Luceti, and we're stuck here, and your bending will be at half power 'cause of the Barrier which is a Shift and that's what it does, and your wings are your life and if they get hurt you get hurt and if them come off you die and then come back in a week I guess and everything here is free 'cause there isn't money and I live in a house with everyone and share a room with Jinora and I think that's everything.
[ She finally, finally stops talking, and looks up at her father expectantly, having told him everything. ]
[ ...so many words. So many things he needs to know for a) official situation-assessing purposes and b) protective fatherly purposes, and why are his ears not fast enough for this. ]
[ BUT HE STILL TRIES VALIANTLY, and he picks out what he can pre-and-post quick breath.
Names that are horribly familiar and impossible to consider, who haven't done her any harm, at the least, from what he understands- someone died, who is Luke, 'Grandpa Aang' again, something about eyebrows, Korra and Tarrlok (well, that's wonderful, wait, why doesn't she remember- yes, he'd been helpful but that hardly makes him less... Tarrlok), Lin, funny hair colors, meeting a giant wolf (?! relevant, and Appa and Momo... this is just ridiculous in scale), Asami (how many of them will there be?), something about hiccups that he's supposed to keep secret and honestly he's losing track for all the effort he's putting into this. The majority of what she says post-refueling-breath is easier to catch.
Still practicing her bending, that's good. It's best to keep up training, especially when one doesn't know what might be coming next. ]
It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. He expects now is a prime opportunity to have a seat on the closest bench and blink. Someone had to have told her where she is, but is the information coming out correctly and properly understood? His daughters are very intelligent, but some things... some things are more complicated than even that allows for.
When in doubt, be dryly amused. ]
Are you sure that's everything? [ Okay, okay. ] I appreciate the... thorough answer. Thank you.
Jinora? Yep! She's probably at home, or at the library. [ Ikki doesn't keep track of her older sister, okay? The library is a place she goes to if she needs to unearth Jinora, though. ] But mommy and Meelo and Rohan aren't.
[ Oh also ] D'you have your journal? I can show you how to video post and voice post and well you know how to write already, and I know a little about filtering but I'm no good at it. That's when you make it so only certain people can see. You should probably let Katara know you're here 'cause we'll have to make more for dinner and set an extra place. [ MUNDANE CONCERNS GO ]
[ Good, back to sentences he can make out. Bad, three of the six of them.
And his mother. Who is being called Katara. That one gets a dubious eyebrow up, actually, because any time someone calls your mother by her name (regardless of their status as grandchild or not), it's a little odd. Also, what. Is a video post. He pulls the journal out of whatever sort of pocket they could feasibly keep them in and holds it up questioningly. He doesn't imagine this will make much sense, either. ]
But daddy, she only ever wants to read in the library. [ Huffy whiny tone? Is a go. ] Besides, I don't leave the town unless someone's with me, and I know lots of the people and I always have my journal! [ pout. ]
[ But distraction! She takes the journal, cheerfully, and opens it up. ] Kay, so this is the main place you want to be. You do this for a voice post [ Demonstrating without hitting the things ] this for a video [ SAME THING ] and for writing you just write. [ Hang on, she probably has an extra pen or crayon or something...Oh, here. Ikki gives Tenzin a pink marker. ] And for filters and stuff, Uncle Sokka's probably better at it, 'cause I've never bothered.
[ That won't fly forever, young lady. Be prepared for that day. Just look at these highly disapproving eyebrows. Companionship over boredom, Ikki.
But very good, not leaving the town.
For now... this is something to get involved in educating himself about. These journals are apparently important (and with what she's saying combined with the little he saw of it otherwise, it's useful), and it would be foolish not to know how to utilize them. She really seems to know what she's doing.
There's even something to write with, that's kind of her. ] Thank you. And this ends up... broadcast.
[ Poke poke poke. Intriguing is a nice tame word for this part of the greater picture. ]
